Color plays a huge role in the overall look of your home. Painting is one of the easiest and quickest ways to transform how your home looks and feels. After all, psychological effects and biological traits create reactions to different colors. Warm and cold colors can make you feel just that: warm or cold! Muted colors can also evoke feelings of serenity while bright colors can make you feel energetic. These colors, when applied throughout your home can make the difference between a dark, depressing room and a bright, cheerful room. Because of this, the perfect paint color is essential to the beginning of a beautiful home.

Neutral vs. Color

Your design selections should be influenced by what you love. Most often, when I have a client who is insistent on painting something green, there is a reason for this. Usually, for the color green, that person has a deeply rooted love for nature or the outdoors. When it comes to selecting whether to use a neutral shade or a color for painting your walls, consider three things: 1. Will I get tired of this color next year? 2. Is this color going to make me feel good? 3. Will this color clash with anything in the room that is a fixed color*? And what do I mean by will it make you feel good? Blues and other dark colors can make us feel cold and depressed. They are best used in small quantities and not as a primary wall paint. Likewise, the color red makes you feel hungry, so if that is not something you want to always feel, it is also best to use it in small quantities.

*examples of fixed colors would be: red brick walls, yellow oak cabinets, etc.

Choosing a Color

The use of colored paint on walls is becoming less and less common. Color isn’t something you should be scared of! After all, we already talked about all of the amazing benefits colors can have on our mood and emotions! They can make you happy or energized. In addition, the most bold and stunning spaces are made that way because of the use of color. Colored paint should be used on your walls, and your color selection should be based on what inspires you. One of the most common “getting to know you questions” is “What’s your favorite color?” Ask yourself, find design inspiration from this color and get started planning how you’ll use it in your space. If you have any hesitations, you can always reach out via our website and ask!

Choosing a Neutral

Neutral colors have a number of benefits within the home. First, they provide you with a blank slate when it comes to decorating. You can now select from almost any color for your furniture, fixtures and décor. This allows you to easily display a focal point (like an accent wall or accent furniture piece). Next, they are very versatile. Choosing neutral colors as your base allows you to change the colors you accessorize with as you desire. Finally, neutral colors produce a calming effect. Light neutrals, like white and shades of white, make a space feel very clean which is always a plus! Last but not least, using neutrals allows you to use bold textures because they won’t have to compete with the colors in your space.

Some of my favorite Sherwin William Paint colors are:

-EIDER WHITE 7014

-AGREEABLE GRAY 7029

-REPOSE GRAY 7015
