Christmas is supposed to be a time to relax, spend quality time with the ones we love, and be grateful for our relationships and all the other important things in life. Despite these efforts, the holiday season can be hectic and stressful. We try so hard to make things perfect for everyone that we lose sight of what this time is truly about. One of our favorite ways to help with the chaos and tension and put us in the Christmas spirit is to create a festive space that speaks peace into our soul. Christmas décor in neutral colors do just that!
Simple Contrast
Neutral colors are more than just shades of white. In fact, there are a variety of colors that fall under the category of “neutral”. Taupe, beiges, grays, creams, browns, and black can all be included in a neutral palette. Excluding variation within your color scheme is boring and falls flat. (Imagine a pure white tree decorated with white bulbs and icicles on a backdrop of snow-covered ground). We like to spice up a monochromatic space by grounding large amounts of lighter hues with sectors of darker neutrals. Add a burlap wrap around the bottom of your white tree and change out the white bulbs for gold. Keep things simple. Remember, neutrals are about calm and tranquility. You don’t want to over-do it with decorations creating clutter. We advise to keep your most treasured items and showcase them.
Fall in Love with Textures
Textures are one of the most important aspects when decorating with neutral colors. They add dimension to an area. This explains the reason that a soft chunky knit blanket thrown over tightly woven chair catches our eye more than a cotton sheet thrown over that same furniture. Glittered items add depth as well as sparkle! We love to combine them with disparate textures to produce a layered effect. This creates interest in the absence of bolder patterns and color arrangements. A celebratory table may include the natural wood texture of the table, woven linen napkins, smooth dinnerware, bristled garland, pitted bulb ornaments, and so many more!
Pop in the Drama
A neutral theme does not mean you can’t have flashy accents within your design! Metallics such as brass, bronze, silver, and gold are all finishes that add pizzazz. This season, neutrals and gold have been a popular combination among our clients. We adore the way iridescent whites stand out subtly, against matte white. For a more classic highlight, mingle some black in. Be mindful of the specific items that the black covers. Black ribbon or ornaments are elegant while a black Christmas tree can dispose eeriness. Earth tones are another good way to add some drama! A natural-colored Christmas tree is the easiest way to incorporate natural shades. Instead of overloading on evergreens alone, we also favor Italian cypress trees. The most important thing to remember is to stay within the same tonal palette. Check undertones in every color. Every hue within a scheme should have the same tone.
