Curtains provide a number of key features to any space. They provide privacy, they block out sunlight, they add personality, they elongate your walls, making the ceiling appear higher, and so much more. They can make a space scream classy and dynamic or make it feel more simple and casual; but whatever your need, there are sure to be curtains to match it. Selecting the right curtains can be a bit overwhelming, therefore my goal in this post will be to walk you through the three most important considerations to make.
Length and Width
Before thinking about where the curtains hit the ground, first decide how high above the window you want the rod placed. Our standard is anywhere from 4-8 inches above the top of the window, depending on the space. The higher the rod is placed, the higher your ceilings will appear making your room feel larger overall. Next, know where you want your curtains to stop. A modern and clean style will have the curtains ending just before they touch the ground; while in more traditional spaces, you often will see the curtains pile towards the bottom on the floor. Understand what style your space is and determine what length you need based on these considerations. When determining proper width, measure your window and double that number. Make sure to add about 3 inches on either side, this helps when blocking out the sun to ensure you have enough extra material on the sides.
Color and Pattern
As with any aspect of Interior Design, your curtains should flow well with the rest of your color palette. Curtains can be used to make a statement or they can simply follow suite with the rest of the room and blend in. They are a great way to add color, texture, and pattern into a space. If you’re wondering if color affects the curtains performance, the answer is yes. A white curtain will allow more light in than, say, black. However, a good quality curtain will be well lined, and the lining key to proper performance.
Custom Made vs. Store Bought
Curtain cost can very immensely based on a number of different items. Custom made window treatments are usually the most expensive. They allow you to customize every item during the process from the fabric selection, to exact measurements, to hanging style. Custom window treatments are typically the best quality too and will almost always outlive store bought. Higher-end retail curtains can have a long life as well, similar to custom-made, however you are much more limited in your choices for color, pattern, materials, etc.
