A lot of planning and consideration goes into designing a space. With everything there is to think about, it all can become very overwhelming. Functionality, colors, proportions, clearances, and visual aspects among many others allows plenty of room for mistakes. Our job is to avert these design mistakes and help you achieve the room of your dreams!
Not Measuring Your Space
Before buying any furniture, you must know the size of the room you are making selections for. Measure the room and check the dimensions of each chair, table, desk, etc. that you are considering adding to your space. Make sure to allow space not only for the furniture itself, but also functionality to use and walk around that furniture. Think about scale and proportions. An oversized plush couch will make a small room feel crowded while a petite table will look lonely and out of place in a spacious area. Rugs are always tough for people to properly size. A good rule of thumb is that a rug should cover six inches under any piece of furniture it sits on. Likewise, it should also be a minimum of six inches and a max of 24 inches from the wall.
Not Considering All Aspects of Lighting
Lighting can make or break a finished design. Different brightness and temperature levels can completely visually transform a room. There are five types of lighting that should be included in every space: natural, general, ambient, accent, and task. Each of these are important and have their own unique purpose. Recklessly Selecting Paint Color
Paint color should be one of the last decisions you make when designing a room. There is a much wider variety of paint colors, tones, and shades out there than there are furniture pieces and décor items! It is much harder to find furniture and accessories to match an already chosen paint color than it is to find a paint color that works well with your chosen elements. A good tip to keep everything cohesive is to make sure all elements (paint included) share the same undertones. When you think you have decided on a hue, check it in your space under the lighting that is to be used. Look at the sample at different times of the day is also incredibly helpful. Natural lighting changes throughout the day, which will also change the appearance of the paint in the space.
