Yellow Hues

Yellow is known to be a bright cheery color but use it in the wrong way and your home will appear to have come from a 1980s magazine. Wood floors and cabinets with yellow undertones play right into this mistake. We’re looking at you honey oak! Paint or re-stain the wood for an inexpensive fix. A light fixture with yellow tinted glass not only has an antique appearance in itself, but it also projects that aspect onto everything in the room. This tint will also make your space feel dingy. Instead opt for clear glass with a bulb with a cool color temperature.

Excessively Matching

Creativity is key to interior design. All in one décor sets are boring. If all the furniture in your bedroom came together matching with the other pieces perfectly, it is time to upgrade. Strive for your furniture to work together, not to look the same. This applies to themed rooms as well. There is a huge difference between a coastal style and a beach theme. When every detail of your room is a beach item, ie: seashell soap dish, driftwood curtain rod, etc., you have switched from coastal style to a beach themed room. Steer clear of being so blunt with your choices. Elect for natural elements like wicker, weathered wood, and jute, and keep things light and airy to achieve the overall style without crossing that line.

Too Many Embellishments

There was a time when overly ornate items were all the rage. That time has faded out. Newer trends like to keep things clean and uncomplicated. This includes undecorating. Gobs of décor items makes your space look overdone and messy. Choose to keep a few loved pieces and donate the rest. Simplicity draws attention to what is important. Elaborate engravings in woodwork and stairway railings are a bit more expensive to update. Most likely they will need a total replacement rather than some sort of modification, but the outcome is well worth it!
