Wood Tones: How to Mix for Optimal Results

Overview
Category

One significant advantage of wood is that it is permanent. Many elements in the home feature wood tones and colors. Cabinetry, trim, flooring, and furniture are all examples. When designing these days, it is exciting to add different patterns, colors, and textures to make an atmosphere visually appealing. It can be puzzling when trying to figure out how to blend all the different types of wood. Whether it's matching a specific piece of furniture to existing flooring or combining different woods. Most people are hesitant to combine it all into one space. We are here to help pick the right wood, color scheme, and create flow in any space of a home.

How to Pick

The neat thing about wood is that every piece has its own characteristics. For example, the grain pattern and the color can change depending on what stain is used. It is important to know what type of wood you want to go with. Do you want warm or cool wood? We suggest picking a dominant wood tone to go off of. It is a good starting point when figuring out what wood furniture pieces to bring in. The different types of wood are endless, such as maple, oak, cherry, walnut, mahogany, fruitwood, and the list goes on. Are you going to want a wood that has orange, yellow, dark brown, red-brown, or blue-brown? Once that is picked out, the next step is to pick out the wall color.

Color Scheme

If you are starting from scratch or just wanting to repaint the walls, it is best to stick to a neutral color scheme. This is great when mixing more than one wood. The color that is chosen will help create a sense of balance. We want it to enhance the space by using dominant hues. Consider the vision of the space. Do you desire high-contrast or low-contrast pairings? Overall, sticking to a light and soft wall color is best. It still creates value between the wall and the wood color. For example, if there is a brown wood with yellow undertones, pick a buttered beige or off white for contrast. After this is achieved, we are ready to start bringing in other wood furniture pieces into the space.

Flow

This is the last step in this process. It is ideal to have a comfortable and pleasing space. Now that the dominant wood and wall color have been picked out, it is time to talk about the furniture. A majority of furniture is made out of wood. First match the undertones between the different pieces. Undertones are the subdued or muted tones of color. Pay close attention to the dominant wood tone: neutral, warm, or cool, so that way it can stay in the same family. In the photo above, the console and dining table are darker than the flooring. They pick up the warm streaks on the wood floor. To create a seamless blend with the console and dining table and the warm grains on the floor.
